Wicca the Path of Nature and the Ancient Ones

Wicca brings with it a responsibility to oneself and nature. It is a path of discovery through nature. Be aware that your life will change once you step upon this path. There is nothing on earth like it.

Some call it a nature religion, but it is a way of life, a way of looking at life, and a way of experiencing life. You must live within the laws of nature. So you must be a keen observer of nature.

There is a three-fold law of retribution that states, “What ever you sent out will return three times, whether it is positive or negative.” This is our commandment. We believe you create your own reality. And you are responsible for that reality. In essence your life is in your hands. Your luck is the luck you create for yourself. We have another law: “An it harm none, do what you will.” This statement includes self. So as you can see there is a lot to this ancient way. But it is a way of finding your bliss. I found the craft in the beginning of the ’70s, and through it I found my peace. There is much to learn. You will never be bored once you begin practicing Wicca. Once you step on the path it becomes a constant movement of knowledge and understanding. The reason you are on the earth will begin to unfold before you. In time you will understand what your lessons are. We in the craft believe in more then one god. We believe in the Goddess as well as God. All life comes through her. We honor the Goddess above all things for this reason. In most other religions there is only one God, a male, but not in the craft.

We worship the Goddess and the Horned God, her consort. His horns are of the animal kingdom. All of the animal kingdom is considered divine in addition to people. The Horned God is the lord of death who is the protector of souls. He is the hunter and provider. We don’t look upon him as a devil because he has horns. We of the craft don’t believe in demons and devils. That is a Christian, Judaic concept. It is not a part of our myths. We worship our gods and goddesses as above us, but we can feel them within us, and about us. We are all one connected by spirit. The gods, goddesses, people, the animal kingdom and all of nature are interconnected. Nothing in the universe is separate. All have impact and affect each other in the most profound way.

When coming from a tradition of only one God you need to submerge yourself in the Goddess to get to know her. Once you do this, you will feel your heart open. The transition is amazing. You need to know the myths. Read as much about them as you can. There are hundreds of books published on mythology. There is so much you can learn about yourself by reading the myths. One of the keys to Wicca is the knowledge of yourself.

Further on in this Book of Shadows I will teach you how to journey with the Gods and Goddesses. When you journey with them you will receive one-on-one instruction from them.

Worshiping the Gods and Goddesses

In most other religions only a male God is worshiped. He is on high, far above us, and he might hear our prayers or not. All you can do is hope for the best. In Wicca, we see the ultimate force as energy, an energy that has no description but contains all the knowledge and love of the universe. Emanating from it are the gods and goddesses. Emanating from the gods and goddesses are men and women. All are interconnected. Nothing is separate. So our gods and goddesses are within us, and all that is alive. Animals have this same connection with the gods and goddesses as we do. So all are divine because we all contain that spark of energy within us. Our gods and goddesses are within us, above us, beneath us, beside us, behind us and before us. We have a relationship with them that flows easily and comfortably. So we never wonder if they hear us, because we can feel it. Coming from a Catholic background I certainly know the difference.

In EarthGuard we worship the Goddess Gaia because she is one of the oldest goddesses known on earth. Gaia is the earth and she has the greatest influence on us. She feeds us and takes us through our lessons in the physical world. She is the great mother of fertility, prosperity, growth and transformation. We are one in spirit with her, and when our spirits leave earth our bodies become part of her. She contains all the knowledge of the universe. We come to her to learn physical lessons. All who come to the physical world will know her.

We also worship the Goddess Diana. She is the moon goddess that affects the ocean tides and our emotions. Next to the earth, she has the greatest effect on us. When we pray we pray to the moon and the moon goddess. Our emotions govern almost everything we do and the choices we make. Our direction comes from the moon goddess. Our subconscious and conscious thoughts are the basis of all the lessons on earth. She helps us to sort through these lessons and to bring about balance to our choices. We ask for her guidance in spiritual matters, where we ask for guidance from Gaia in all physical matters.

We also worship the great Horned God Herne. He is the great hunter, provider and the guardian of souls. He is the protector and the strength when we need it. He is also of the animal kingdom, so he has the knowledge of the animal world, which is considered divine. We ask his aid when our time of passing comes, and we don’t fear him because he, above all, is our protector. These are but names we use for these energies. They are the energies of the spirit of the Earth Mother, the Moon Goddess and the Horned God. If you were to use other names for these goddesses and god, it would not make any difference. It is your intension and visualization that counts.

Choosing a Magickal Name

In the craft we choose a magickal name. This marks your birth into the craft. When you were born into your family your parents chose your name. In the craft you get to choose a name that has meaning to you. It can be a name from mythology or something in nature. It can be a person whom you admire.

When I first entered the craft I read over many lists of names from Amber to Vivian. There were names like Spring and River, things in nature. There are so many names, it can be difficult to choose.

One of the people in my group told me the unique way he chose his name. He took a set of dice and placed the Rune alphabet on them. The Runes are an ancient Celtic and magickal alphabet. He kept throwing the dice until he was able to put together a name. He did it this way because he felt the Goddess would have a hand in choosing his name. I came across the name of Cara. I liked the sound of it. It’s meaning is friend and dear one.

Friendship was very important to me at that time and still is. So it always felt right and still does, more than 30 years later.
